Partnership with Bee Downtown

There's new buzz at the bakery! We partnered with Bee Downtown to support sustainable urban agriculture and cultivate an appreciation for the importance of pollinators at our bakery in St. Petersburg, FL. Together, we are protecting bees, building habitat, and strengthening our workplace and local community.

Did you know that of the 100 crop species that provide 90% of the world’s food supply, bees pollinate 71 of them? Pollenity estimates that in the U.S. alone, bees pollinate $16 billion worth of crops, so it’s safe to say that without the bees, the human race would quickly go hungry.

Through our partnership, Lantmännen Unibake USA is able to support the ecosystem, provide employee engagement, and strengthen our community, all while helping beautify the city of St. Petersburg, FL. Bee Downtown installed three hand-painted and company branded hives on-site at our bakery to extend our sustainable initiatives to educate employees and the community on the environmental and economic impact of pollinators. Now, we have the ability to create unique experiences that allow employees and the community to learn and engage with bees, agriculture, each other and their workplace.

We are committed to Baking for a Better World, and partnering with Bee Downtown allows us to do just that!

Honey bees — wild and domestic — perform about 80% of all pollination worldwide. 70 out of the top 100 human food crops are pollinated by bees.

Bee Informed

Honey bee populations have been declining, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. And that’s a big deal since honey bees perform about 80 percent of all pollination worldwide. As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem and they allow a diverse number of different species to co-exist. A single bee colony can pollinate 300 million flowers each day. Bees are responsible for 1 out 3 items on your dinner plate. By partnering with Bee Downtown, we are able to contribute to a sustainable food system, cultivate an appreciation for pollinators, and educate our employees and community through the corporate hive program.

Beehives at the Bakery

Bees lie at the heart of our survival, and they are essential to the health and prosperity of countless ecosystems. However, the bee population is in jeopardy. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, more than half of North America’s 4,000 native bee species are in decline, with 1 in 4 species at risk of extinction. Given that bees play a major role in sustainable agriculture, Unibake USA has made it our mission to do our part in protecting the bees by providing protected habitats, spreading awareness throughout our community, and supporting them with an engaged global network. We strive towards Baking for a Better World and this includes creating a better world for our bees to thrive in.
