Rethinking a Bakery Classic
What happens when a Danish pastry meets a waffle iron? Our Corporate Executive Chef found out by transforming Schulstad Large Cinnamon Swirls into crisp, golden waffles topped with warm spiced apples, whipped cream cheese, cinnamon cookie crumble, and bourbon maple syrup.
The result is Apple Cinnamon Swirl Waffles, an indulgent breakfast or brunch creation that pairs the flaky, layered texture of Danish pastry with the crisp finish of a waffle. It is a creative example of how foodservice operators can give familiar bakery products a fresh presentation without having to start from scratch.
Cinnamon & Apple: A Winning Combination for Fall
When it comes to fall flavors, apple offers plenty of potential for seasonal menu innovation. Its familiarity makes it an appealing foundation for creative breakfast and brunch offerings, especially when paired with warm spices and indulgent toppings.
According to The Food Institute (2026), 87% of consumers like or love apple, highlighting its broad appeal. For operators, combining apple with cinnamon is a way to tap into classic autumn flavors while introducing a fresh take on a familiar favorite.
The Apple Cinnamon Swirl Waffles recipe brings these ingredients together in a format that feels right at home on a fall menu. Warm spiced apples complement the cinnamon pastry, while whipped cream cheese adds a tangy contrast. Cinnamon cookie crumble and bourbon maple syrup complete the dish, adding texture and richness.
More Than a Danish: A New Take on Cinnamon Swirls
Schulstad Large Cinnamon Swirls feature authentic Danish pastry dough with 24 light, flaky layers and a warm cinnamon flavor. While delicious as a traditional pastry, they can also inspire creative applications that help operators differentiate their menus.
Pressing the swirls in a waffle iron creates a crisp, golden exterior and a distinctive presentation. Paired with seasonal toppings, the finished dish can work as a signature brunch item, a hotel breakfast special, or a limited-time offering at cafés and restaurants.
This approach demonstrates how a versatile bakery product can support menu creativity while giving operators a starting point for developing distinctive dishes.
